Here, the NanoRacks-Remove Debris satellite is deployed from the International Space Station in 2018. Before revelations about Russia’s development of a nuclear anti-satellite weapon, there had been indications of global recognition that the use of certain space weapons was bad for everyone. The proposed defense budget for 2025 does not reflect the scale and urgency of the need to counter space threats and protect space systems. Learning how to operate satellites in a space environment clogged with debris or increased radiation caused by a space weapon is also important. We need a two-pronged effort to prepare for the worst: Double down on efforts to protect and maintain access to space in a hostile space environment and consider how to operate without space.

Buell died Monday in Sunnyvale, California, where his daughter lived, after battling pneumonia, his daughter Barbara Buell said in an email. “Hal pushed us an extra step,” Adams said in an internal AP newsletter at the time of Buell's retirement in 1997. Buell implemented the transition from a chemical darkroom where film was developed to digital transmission and digital news cameras. He also helped create AP’s digital photo archive in 1997. Buell is survived by his daughter, Barbara Buell, and her husband, Thomas Radcliffe, as well as two grandchildren and a great-grandson.

A spokesperson for the regional coast guard in Kagoshima Prefecture said that one person who was brought to hospital had been confirmed dead. A caller reported that an Osprey aircraft of unknown affiliation had crashed at around 2:47 p.m. local time on Nov. 29, a coast guard spokesperson told NBC News. The Osprey aircraft, which has vertical take-off and landing as well as long-range, high-speed capabilities, has been involved in a spate of recent incidents. Three U.S. Marines died in August when a MV-22B Osprey tilt-rotor aircraft crashed off the coast of northern Australia, with 23 on board.

Tokyo CNN —The world’s newest island has risen from the sea off the coast of the Japanese island of Iwo Jima in the Pacific Ocean. Japan’s Meteorological Agency (JMA) told CNN the unnamed island was formed by an undersea volcanic eruption. The photos show a small eruption sending a dark cloud of ash above the tiny island, which is now part of the Ogasawara Island chain. The island sits about 1,200 kilometers (750 miles) south of mainland Japan and a kilometer from Iwo Jima, the island that saw some of the fiercest battles of World War II in the Pacific. US Marines fought tens of thousands of Japanese garrisoned there in a battle that killed more than 7,000 Americans and 22,000 Japanese troops.

TOKYO (AP) — An undersea volcano erupted off Japan three weeks ago, providing a rare view of the birth of a tiny new island, but experts say it may not last very long. The unnamed undersea volcano, located about 1 kilometer (half a mile) off the southern coast of Iwo Jima, which Japan calls Ioto, started its latest series of eruptions on Oct. 21. Volcanic activity at the site has since subsided, and the newly formed island has somewhat shrunk because its “crumbly” formation is easily washed away by waves, Usui said. “But the island may not last very long.”Undersea volcanos and seismic activities have formed new islands in the past. In 2015, a new island was formed as a result of a month-long eruption of a submarine volcano off the coast of Tonga.

(AP) — Vermont State Police are asking the public, businesses and hunters near a state university campus to review their surveillance systems after a retired dean and professor who was married to best-selling author Ron Powers was found shot to death on a rail trail this week. Police said Friday night an autopsy showed that Honoree Fleming, 77, of Castleton, died from a gunshot wound to the head on Thursday afternoon. She was found on the Delaware & Hudson Rail Trail about a mile (1.61 kilometers) south of the Castleton campus of Vermont State University, which was closed on Friday because of the investigation. A witness reported a possible suspect was northbound on the trail walking towards the campus after gunshots were heard, police said. However, the claim stems from a satirical website and the image circulating is digitally altered. Christopher Hershey, Chief of Staff at the George Washington Memorial Parkway, maintained by NPS and where the Marine Corps War Memorial is located, said in an email that the U.S. flag at the monument has not been replaced.
